IDENTIFICATION AND APPRAISAL OF INVESTMENT PROJECTS IN REGION 3 AND 6 FOR AL-MESH PLC.

MCE undertook identification and appraisal of rain fed and irrigation projects in the development, operation and management of agro-industrial schemes in the Amhara Region for the production and marketing of agricultural products both for the domestic and export markets.

The study was based on the analysis and evaluation of existing data and information and reconnaissance field studies and analysis.

EVALUATION OF FLOOD PROTECTION AND DRAINAGE PROJECTS IN THE BORKENA RIVER VALLEY FOR WORLD VISION ETHIOPIA

MCE undertook evaluation of flood protection and drainage in Borkena River Valley which incorporates:

The study also includes a system of drainage to cater for run-off coming from 13 culvert outlets along the main Dessie – Addis Ababa highway and excess run off from Gerby and Katchur villages which are all directed to the internal drains mentioned above.

AFAR RANGELANDS AND WATER DEVELOPMENT STUDY, 1997 - 2000

MCE completed the Rangelands and Water Development Study for Afar Regional State.The study included assessment of the location and extent of population, climate, water budget, relief, and topography, geology and tectonics, vegetation, land use and land cover, socio-economic, livestock and rangelands development.

WASHED COFFEE PROCESSING PROJECT FOR DINSHO AGRO-INDUSTRIES PLC - 1999

MCE in association with ABD-Consult undertook the study to assess the situation of washed coffee in all areas of Oromia Region.

SHERARO AND TAHTAY ADIABO AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT STUDY, DEC. 1995 - 1999

MCE undertook an agricultural based regional development study in north-west Ethiopia covering an area of about 400,000ha. The study aimed at assessing the resources, development potentials and constraints and preparing short and long term development plans for the rational utilization of the land, soil, water, forest, livestock and other resources. Water harvesting techniques including spate irrigation were considered for the lowland areas.

SELALE DAIRY PROJECT, WATER MANAGEMENT ASPECT

MCE undertook a reconnaissance study of the water resources of the Selale area covering five districts for the provision of water for domestic, livestock and irrigation use. The study also covered the socio-economic aspect.

FINCHAA SUGAR PROJECT SOIL PROFILE SURVEY

The service provided comprised the provision of detail soil profile survey of 6,000 ha land to determine the suitability of the land for sugar cane production.

PASTORAL AREAS DEVELOPMENT STUDY

MCE in association with Techniplan of Italy is undertaking a consultancy service which includes a baseline Survey, Strategic Planning and identifying priority Development projects in pastoral areas of Ethiopia.

PREPARATION OF BUSINESS PLAN FOR GOJJAM FARMS

MCE in association with DEVECON Oy, Finland has undertaken the detailed design and tender document preparation of Awash International Bank and Awash Insurance Company Headquarter building. In the construction phase, MCE is undertaking contract administration and supervision work. This eighteen-storey twin office building has a total floor area of 22,500 m2.

AIB AND AIC HEADQUARTERS, 1999

MCE has won 1st and 2nd prize for design proposals presented for two alternative sites for the headquarters of AIB (Awash International Bank) and AIC (Awash Insurance Company) Headquarters.

REHABILITATION OF FOUR TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTES (TTI) IN OROMIA 1998 - 2001

MCE in association with Dorsh Consult of Germany carried out need assessment of the four TTI located in Oromiya Regions, Nazreth, and also undertook detailed engineering design and preparation of tender documents. MCE also carried out construction supervision services.

MCE has undertaken the detail engineering design and study of operational and maintenance, management set-up for Dale and Shebedino Rural Water Supply Scheme. The objective of this project is to provide adequate and safe water for over 271, 000 people. The study included assessment of manpower and financial requirements of the operation and maintenance of the system, recommend an appropriate community managed management system, study and survey of the optimal pipe line route, design of the spring intake, booster pumping stations, reservoirs and main pipe line and distribution net work in the SNNPRS, South Ethiopia.

IMPROVEMENT TO INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES AND WATER SUPPLY FOR SANDFORD ENGLISH COMMUNITY SCHOOL 1998 - 2000

MCE undertook the study for the improvement of the existing infrastructure, water supply, sewerage system, storm drains external works and electrical installation. MCE also conducted construction supervision for the rehabilitation works.

ELEVEN TOWNS WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY; COMPLETED

MCE was sub-consultant to Sanyo Consultants of Japan and undertook the survey of water use and sanitary conditions as well as surveys of socio-economic and cultural background of the target population. The project was funded by Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).

SMALL TOWNS WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT, UGANDA - COMPLETED

MCE through its Nairobi based subsidiary firm, MBC, and in association with ACE of Kampala, Uganda and John Van Nostrand Associates Limited (JVA) of Canada, was involved in the design and construction supervision of water supply and sanitation services for the towns of Lugazi and Wobulenzi in Uganda. The study which commenced in 1994 was based on the concept of demand-driven, community-based services.

WUSH WUSH II TEA PLANTATION WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

MCE undertook the assessment of availability of ground water system for Wush Wush II Tea Factory and worker’s residential area and prepared designs, 1998.

DIRE-DAWA TEXTILE FACTORY; FEASIBILITY STUDY OF WATER SUPPLY 1994-1995

MCE was engaged by the Dire-Dawa Textile Factory to assess the existing factory water demand and supply and to come up with recommendations and designs for system improvement, upgrading and/or expansion.

2 TOWNS WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

Feasibility study and design for water supply and sanitation for the towns of Axum and Lalibela. The work was carried out by MCE in association with DEVECON of Finland.

ADWA WATER SUPPLY STUDY- 1993

Feasibility study and design of a water supply system for the town of Adwa, based on storage dam. The study also included the provision of drinking water supplies to the small rural towns and communities around Adwa and was carried out for Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WSSA) by MCE in joint venture with DEVECON of Finland.

MEKELE WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY- 1993

Feasibility study and design of the water supply and sanitation system. Part of the work was undertaken by MCE as sub-consultants to DEVECON of Finland.


TOWNS WATER SUPPLY STUDY

Feasibility study and design of water supply system for Assela, Shashemane and Zeway towns and rehabilitation for 7 other towns. The study also included water supplies to the rural communities in the immediate environs of towns and was conducted for Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. A staff of MCE participated as Deputy Project Manager of the Tahal Consulting Engineers team.

5 TOWNS WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY

Feasibility study and design of water supply and sanitation systems for 5 major towns in Ethiopia. Part of the work was undertaken by MCE as sub-consultants to DEVECON Engineers and Architects.

GODE AGRO-INDUSTRIAL PROJECT

Feasibility study for irrigation study on 20,000 ha land and associated agro industrial establishment including the provision of drinking water supply to the surrounding rural communities. The study was conducted for ministry of state farm. A staff of MCE participated as an irrigation expert as part of Tahal Consulting Engineers team.

ALMA SPICE FACTORY GROUND WATER INVESTIGATION

Investigation of ground water for factory use and preparation of tender documents.

STUDY ON THE MANAGEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT

MCE in association with SINTEC undertook a study of the Management of Construction Equipment for the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund. The study reviewed the existing establishment of operation and maintenance of water supply and earthworks construction equipment in Ethiopia. Over six alternatives for the management of equipment fleet were assessed and based on objective criteria established, the preferred fleet management options were ranked and recommendation provided. The study was supported by UNDP.

ASSOSA-KURMUK ROAD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION PROJECT

A contract was signed between The Ethiopian Roads Authority and Joint venture of Arabian Consulting Engineering Services and MCE for design of Assosa Kurmuk Road Project a total of 100 Kms. The contract also include construction supervision of the road.

NEKEMT-BURE ROAD DESIGN FOR ROAD MAINTENANCE PROJECT 300km

MCE in Joint venture with CORE consulting Engineers is working on design of road maintenance of a 300 Km Nekemt Bure Project.

DEJEN-MOTA AND DEBARK ADI ARKAY ROAD DESIGN PROJECT, 4km EACH

MCE in association with CRE Consulting Engineers is working g on Design of two roads, Dejen Mota and Debark Adi Arkay Road projects. The two roads have total length of 40 Kms each.

GONDAR BY-PASS CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION OF ASPHALT ROAD

MCE in association with Daret Engineering is working construction supervision of an 11 Kms asphalt road.

GUTTEN-FINCHA ROAD DESIGN PROJECT

MCE is carrying out a design of road from Gutten to Fincha a 140 kilometre road. The service include survey, environmental study, contract document preparation and supervision works.

GONDAR DEBARK ROAD PROJECT

MCE in joint venture with Kocks Consult GmbH of Germany is involved in review of feasibility study and design of road from Gondar to Debark. It is a 102 Km road. The service include economic study, socio-economic studies and survey.

SHASHEMENE-ALABA PERIODIC MAINTENANCE PROJECT

A contract was signed between The Ethiopian Roads Authority and Metaferia Consulting Engineers to supervise the Shashemene – Alaba Road maintenance work which is 50 km long and with a contract completion of period. The Contractor is the Shashemene District Maintenance office of ERA.

GOBA-MESLO-BITATA

Under a contract to Ethiopian Roads Authority, Metaferia Consulting Engineers (MCE) is undertaking the condition survey, design amendments and construction supervision of the subject 60Km road periodic maintenance project. The condition of 5 Bridges along the route have also been studied.

NEJO-MENDI ROAD UPGRADING PROJECT

Ethiopian Roads Authority and MCE, as a sole consultant, entered into a contract to undertake the construction supervision of the 78Km subject project, which is located in Oromia Regional State. The work includes construction supervision and making some design amendments of 5 Bridges and other drainage structure works as well as the earthwork, and pavement works.

ENDETO-GASSERA ROAD DESIGN PROJECT

MCE undertake a contract with the Oromia National State to provide consultancy services for the detail engineering design of the subject road project of a 61 km Road design project, located in the Oromia Regional State. The Design works include the design of several bridges including Wabe River Bridge and culverts as well. Wabe River is one of the major two tributaries of Wabi-Shebele River.


GEDO NEKEMT-BEDELE ROAD DESIGN PROJECT

MCE in association with Kocks Consult, Germany undertake a contract with the Ethiopian Roads Authority to provide consultancy services for the detail engineering design of the subject road project of a 225 km Road design project, located in the Oromia Regional State. The Design works include the detail engineering design of several Bridges.

MAZORIA – DURAME – DURGI ROAD UPGRADING PROJECT 2001 -PRESENT

MCE is undertaking the Construction Supervision of this 72 Km. Road Project. It will be built to a feeder road standard. The project started towards the end of 2001 and will take 30 months to complete it.

PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE / MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

In association with SMEC of Australia MCE is currently working on developing the system for Addis Ababa City Roads Authority.

KOBO-LALIBELA ROAD REHABILITATION PROJECT

MCE completed detailed engineering design of 110 km of Kobo-Lalibela Road Rehabilitation project. The study included rehabilitation of the existing road, tender document preparation and land acquisition plan preparation

CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION AND DESIGN REVIEW OF CHIFRA – WEKISHET RURAL ROAD PROJECT (60 KM)

MCE completed the design review and construction supervision of Chifra – Wekishet Rural Road Project.

TANZANIA, AGRICULTURAL MARKETING SERVICES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME, 2001

MCE supported the African Development Bank in conducting pre-appraisal of agricultural marketing services development through the deployment of an infrastructure engineer, and caring the rural marketing infrastructure development component (upgrading rural feeder roads and market centers).

GEWANE - MILLE ROAD PROJECT ( 145 KM LONG), 1999 –2002

MCE was engaged in the supervision of Gewane - Mille Road Project study with Sheladia Associates Inc. The work included rehabilitation of the existing road to a two lane asphalt concrete standard with a 7 meter carriage way width and 1.5 meter shoulders over an approximate length of 145 km. In addition, improvement to the drainage system and structures along the route, formed part of the work components.

CONSULTANCY FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (2001 – PRESENT)

In association with SMEC of Australia, MCE is currently preparing manuals for highway design, bridge design, pavement design and contract documents for Addis Ababa City Roads Authority.

7 ROADS FEASIBILITY STUDY, 1999 - 2000

MCE in association with KOCKS CONSULT GMbH completed the Feasibly Study of the Nekempte - Assosa, Dembi-Gambela, Nazareth - Dodola - goba, Woreta - Woldiya, Gondar - Bereb River, Adigrat - Adwa and Dera - Mechara roads.

GEMESO KENERA----CHULURA----TITCHA ROAD PROJECT, 1998
Under contract to the South Region Rural Road's Authority, MCE carried out detailed engineering design and tender document preparation for Gemeso Kenera----Chulura----Titcha Road Project. The road was 40 - 50 km long.

GINDO - SHENEN RURAL ROAD; 1998

Under contract to Oromia Rural Roads Authority, MCE was engaged in the survey, detail design and preparation of tender document of 60 km rural road.

ACCESS ROAD FROM SAGURE TO ASHEBEKA WATER INTAKE, 1997

MCE was involved in the survey, design and supervision of the access road for Asela Water Supply system from Sagure to Ashebeka Water Intake connecting Digelu village. The study was financed by The Regional State of Oromia Water, Mineral & Energy Resources Development Bureau. The road length was 15 km.

GONDER - HUMERA ROAD UP-GRADING PROJECT, 1997 - 1998

MCE in association with Sheladia Associates of USA was engaged in the preparation of survey and design of the upgrading of 250 km, Gondar - Humera Road. The road was planned to be upgraded to a feeder road standard.

ARBOYE - TIBILA RURAL ROAD PROJECT 1997 – 1999.

MCE was engaged by the Ethio-Italian Development Co-operation, Arsi-Bale Rural Development Project for the survey, design and construction supervision of Arboye - Tibila Road. The design and construction supervision work of the road was completed to RR50 standard. The total length of the road was 38 km.
The project was financed by the Italian Government.

FEASIBILITY STUDY OF SHERARO INTEGRATED WEREDA DEVELOPMENT

Under contact to Tigray Agricultural Development Bureau, MCE undertook the study of rural development programs for 5 woredas taking into account various infrastructure including 213 km roads connecting the woreda capital urban centers. The work for the road part included route selection and assessment of the different drainage and crossing structures to assess the feasibility of the road net work.

AWASH FLOOD CONTROL AND WATER SHED MANAGEMENT PROJECT

MCE in association with Sir Williams Halcrow and Partners limited of UK and Sogreah of France is undertaking study of Awash Flood control and watershed management. MCE has provided a Socio-economic, Agronomist, Financial Analyst, Irrigation Engineer, and Environmentalist.

FEASIBILITY STUDY AND ENGINEERING DESIGN OF OF 6 IRRIGATION PROJECTS

MCE has undertaken the feasibility study and Engineering Design of Darge, Ide, Mejege, Gonga, Dhakat and Fedis.

ASSESSMENT OF EXPERIENCE AND OPPORTUNITIES ON MEDIUM AND LARGE SCALE IRRIGATION IN ETHIOPIA

MCE has undertaken a study of existing irrigation schemes, private sector’s role in irrigation, opportunities and and constraints of promoting medium and large scale irrigation at national level.

KOGA DAM AND IRRIGATION DESIGN PROJECT

MCE is participating in the undertaking of Koga Dam and Irrigation and Watershed Design project. MCE provides key project staffs as Deputy Resident Engineer, Geo-technical Engineer, Irrigation Engineer, Hydrologist and CAD Operators. The major works of the project includes main and saddle dam designs, Geo-technical investigation, Flood analysis for optimum spillway design and drainage structures, reservoir simulation, Irrigation system design for about 6,000 ha irrigation development in the Koga valley, tender document preparation and construction supervision.

MASTER PLAN STUDY FOR LEGEDADI DIRE AND GEFERSA CATCHMENT AREAS AND BATHYMETRIC SURVEY FOR LEGEDADI, DIRE AND GEFERSA RESERVOIRS, 1999

MCE in association with Tahal Consulting Engineers Ltd undertook Reservoirs Bathymetric Survey and Catchment Areas for Legedadi, Drie and Gefersa Reservoir for the Addis Ababa Water Supply.

SURVEY AND DESIGN FOR MATTLE FARM, MEKI – ZEWAY IRRIGATION

MCE conducted Topography, soil survey and mapping of 1,000 ha in Mattle farm, Meki-Zeway area. The study included detailed topography and soil survey of 300 ha as a basis for designing drip irrigation system

FEASIBILITY STUDY AND ENGINEERING DESIGN OF SMALL-SCALE IRRIGATION, 2000 – 2001

Under contract to Oromi Irigation Development Authority, MCE is undertaking field surveys and preparation of study, design and tender documentation. The work is supported by IFAD.

WABI SHEBELE RIVER BASIN INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT MASTER PLAN STUDY, 2002

MCE is sub-consultant to WWDSE and is involved in a multi-disciplinary study dealing with physical resource assessment, socio-economic surveys, identification of development issues and constraints, definition of strategies and elaboration of phased development. The study will be undertaken in 3 phases and is due for completion in 2004.

ACTION PLAN FOR FLOOD CONTROL AND DRAINAGE, 2000 - 2001

Under sub-consultancy agreement to Devecon of Finland, MCE prepared assessment of flood characteristics and drainage network for Bahir Dar Town.

STUDY ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) ACTIVITIES IN THE WATER SECTOR, 2001 - 2002

Under contract to Science and Technology Commission, and in association with ECO-Consult, MCE is engaged in the elaboration of the needs for institutionalized R&D activities in the water sector.

MOZAMBIQUE, SPECIAL PROGRAMME FOR FOOD SECURITY (SPFS), 2000

Under contract to the African Development Bank, MCE participated in the appraisal of SPFS Phase 1 for possible bank financing, Rehabilitation of small scale irrigation schemes was included in the programme.

MALAWI, SMALL HOLDERS SUGAR CANE OUTGROWERS SCHEME, 1999

Under contract to the African Development Bank, MCE participated in the appraisal of the small holder outgrowers scheme growing sugar cane under sprinkler irrigation.

COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION OF OROMIA'S WATER RESOURCES POTENTIAL, 1998

Under agreement with Oromiya Economic Study Project Office, MCE prepared an assessment of the water resources in Oromiya Region. Irrigation, water supply and hydropower potential, status and development was reviewed, together with privatization for phased development.

PREPARATION OF WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT POLICY, 1997 - 1998

MCE was involved in the development of Water Resources Management Policy for the African Development Bank.

SMALL SCALE IRRIGATION PROJECT APPRAISAL, GHANA, 1997

Under contract to the African Development Bank, MCE was involved in the Appraisal of Small - Scale Irrigation Project in Ghana.

AL-MESH PRIVATE LIMITED COMPANY- 1997

Identification and Appraisal of Investment project in Region 3 and 6. The appraisal covered the water and land resources assessment over an area of 400,000 ha to select suitable large scale development projects.

FLOOD PROTECTION AND DRAINAGE STUDY

Flood Protection and drainage study in the Borkana River Valley. The activities carried out include impact assessment of flood protection dyke constructed through World Vision support and the assessment of flood and drainage problem with provision of appropriate solution.

WEITO RIVER IRRIGATION SCHEME, 1997

MCE was involved in the detailed design of a diversion structure (weir), main canal, irrigation system review and design, and off-line storage. The client was Birale Agricultural Development PLC, a private investor, developing some 4000 ha under irrigation. Cotton was the main crop, however, horticultural crops, vegetables, oil seeds and some cereals were also being grown on portions of the land.

ASSAITA IRRIGATION DEVELOPMENT PROJECT WATER RESOURCES ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

MCE in association with HALCROW were engaged by AL-MESH plc to prepare a pre-investment study followed by detail design and set-up of management system for an irrigation development on an area of about 12,000 ha in the Lower Awash Valley. The study and evaluation involved assessment of water availability and allocation in the Awash basin, detailed sectoral studies in the area of land resource, agriculture, engineering, environment, socio-economics and the analysis of alternative development options and preparation of optimum schemes.

GIDABO IRRIGATION PROJECT

Based on the outcome of the preliminary assessment of the water and land resources potentials, detailed designs of the irrigation system for intensive agriculture of high value crops was carried out. MCE was sub-consultant to Tahal Consulting Engineers.

IFAD, SPECIAL COUNTRY PROGRAMME PHASE II, PREPARATION OF PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION MANUAL (PIM), MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCE

MCE was involved in the preparation of Programme Implementation Manual for Tigary, Amhara and SNNPRS Regions for the Ministry of Water Resources.

NEKEMTE AGRO-INDUSTRIAL PROJECT

Appraisal on land development design and agro-ecological study. The study was focusing on 2,000 ha irrigation systems and soil conservation study for 20,000 ha cultivated land. The consultancy work was done by MCE in association with SINTEC for North - Western Agricultural Development Corporation.

ASSESSMENT OF QUANTITIES

MCE in Association with ABD-Consult undertook an assessment for over 35 km of canal works and 70 km of road network. In addition, MCE provided assistance in contract administration for the Finchaa Sugar Factory Project.

SUPERVISION OF SUGAR CANE PRODUCTION PROJECT, NIGERIA, 1997

Under contract to the African Development Bank, MCE undertook supervision of sugar cane production project under irrigated conditions.

PRE-FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR ADDIS ABABA GOLF COURSE AND COUNTRY CLUB, DINSHO PLC. , 1996

MCE undertook the pre-feasibility study of the Golf Course and Country club, detail designs for the investment projects and also the organizational set-up for Dinsho Plc.

PRE-FEASIBILITY STUDIES FOR PPC BAG PRODUCTION PLANT, (1997)

MCE was engaged for the feasibility studies of PPC Bag Production Plant, financed by Dinsho Pvt. Ltd. Co. The study included assessment of capital and raw material requirement, market condition, economic and social impact of the project.

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MATCH FACTORY, 1998

MCE in association with ABD-Consult studied the establishment of the first Match Manufacturing Factory in Oromia Region for Dinsho Pvt. Ltd. Co.

FEASIBILITY STUDY OF SHOE FACTORY, 1997 - 1998

MCE was involved in the feasibility study of the establishment of a new Shoe Factory in Addis Ababa. The study indicated the overall shoe production condition in Addis Ababa and opportunity of job creation.

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MILK AND MILK PROCESSING PLANT, 1997

MCE undertook the feasibility study for the establishment of Milk and Milk Processing Plant at Sebeta for Dinsho Pvt. Ltd. Co.

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF BICYCLE ASSEMBLY PLANT, 1997

MCE was involved in the feasibility study for the establishment of Bicycle Assembly Plant at Oromiya Region at Debre Zeit for Dinsho Pvt. Ltd. Co.

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF GARAGE, 1997

MCE was engaged for the feasibility study of establishment of a Garage for Dinsho Pvt. Ltd. Co. The study included the establishment of modern maintenance facilities which took into account the needs and capabilities of the Dinsho Group and which should function as a profitable economic activity.

MICRO-PROJECTS EVALUATION

Pilot-Phase Micro-Projects Evaluation. The activities involved the appraisal and evaluation on 219 micro projects implemented in the pilot phase by Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation Fund.

MCE has provided training to the staffs of 9 water supply utilities in Malawi. The training was focusing on:

TRAINING IN WATER HARVESTING, 1996

MCE conducted training programmes in water harvesting techniques for Christian Relief and Development Association (CRDA). The services provided included the provision of trainers and full course notes for training of some 29 NGO staff. The topics covered included the hydrology and the control of ephemeral water resources and their sustainable development, including site selection and evaluation, spate irrigation, community participation and management.

The services provided comprised the provision of training personnel and course material to train staff of Christian Relief Development Association and affiliated 23 non governmental organizations.
