Lusaka Water Supply, Sanitation and Drainage Project

MCE as sub consultant to UWP of South Africa had deployed two Resident engineers on the Lusaka Water Supply, sanitation and Drainage construction supervision project. The project is aimed at improving Lusaka city coverage of water supply sanitation and drainage. The project is funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) a United States Government Agency.

Wolkait Sugar Development Project, Construction Supervision and Contract Management Works for Zarema May Day Dam

MCEin Joint Venture with Studio GalliIngegneriaS.p.A and Sembenelli Consulting S.r.l of Italy has signed a consultancy service agreement for Construction Supervision and Contract Management works for Zarema May-Day Dam Project. May Day dam is being built on Zarema River in WolkaitWoreda, Tigray State, on 36 hectares of land. The dam will have a width of 720 meters with height of 143 meters. It creates artificial lake that collects 3.5 billion cubic meters of water when completed.

Capacity Building Support (Baseline assessment and Training) for Twenty Towns Water Boards and utilities Operators

MCEis engaged by WaterAid Ethiopia to undertake capacity building program for 20 towns across the country. CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT AND NETWORK MANAGEMENT/LEAKAGE DETECTION AND CONTROL GUIDANCE MANUAL DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION FOR SEVEN TOWNS WATER UTILITIES

MCE is undertaking a consultancy service with agreement signed with WaterAid Ethiopia to strengthen the capacity of the Town Water board (TWB) and key utility staff with working system for better planning and implementation of their water supply systems and build their oversight and management of the system. The undertaking also includes developing a new Leakage Detection and Control Guidance manual.

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR WATER SOURCE AVAILABILITY ASSESSMENT AT SCHOOLS IN JIMMA AND SHBEDINO PROGRAM UNITS

MCE is undertaking a consultancy service with an agreement signed with Plan International Ethiopia to assess the potentials of ground water at shallow depth in school compound for income generation. The project is also aimed at assessing surface water options for school potable economic and income generation and assessment of potential of water connection from the existing water schemes and performs a detailed design of connection system.

ASSESSMENT OF EXISTING PERFORMANCE AND CAPACITIES OF SEVEN TOWNS WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION ENTERPRISES

MCE is undertaking a consultancy service to WaterAid Ethiopia to develop a comprehensive baseline data as per the expected impacts, outcomes, outputs and established milestones of the projects. MCE has established performance monitoring indicators and undertook inventory of existing town WASH services and assessed their performance and provided recommendation of performance and assess M & E plan of the project.

CONCERTED MUNICIPAL STRATEGIES PROGRAM DEBRE BIRHAN TOWN

MCEhas completed a consultancy service toPartenariat Pour Le Developpement Municipal (PDM) based in Cotonu Benin Republic that coordinates program financed by the European Commission and French Agency for Development. The program is implanted in large Africa towns. The program focuses on involvement of stakeholders in the formulation phase. DebreBirhan is one of towns selected for the work. The works included base-line study, formulation of the WSS municipal strategy.

The assessment includes evaluation of the appropriateness of technical, financial, economical, social, environmental and commercial and engineering and other aspects of the feasibility studies.

DESIGN OF SANITATION SYSTEM FOR GAMBO HOSPITAL, MISSION AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES

MCE with a contract from Gambo Leprosy Control Center and Gambo General Rural Hospital has undertaken improvement of the mission and surrounding villages waste water management system. The work included study review,, conducting geotechnical investigation, preparation of detailed Engineering design, preparation of onsite facilities and preparation of standard specification and tender document.

WOLKITE WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY

MCE is undertaking a consultancy service agreement with Wolkite Town Water and Sewerage Enterprise for study and design of the Town’s Water supply. The study includes review and verification of studies for the water supply and sanitation project and preparation of updated project documents design review s, construction supervision.

HARAR CITY SANITATION AND DESIGN PROJECT

MCEis undertaking a consultancy service aimed at developing integrated and cost effective sewerage storm water and solid waste collection, conveying, treatment and disposal systems. The project is expected to improve access to sanitation facilities, improved hygiene.

MCEundertook study of Technical solutions and cost for rehabilitation of more than seven water supply schemes in Ethiopia for Italian.

PREPARATION OF APPRAISAL TOOLKIT AND APPRAISAL OF 3 TOWN WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION PROJECT

MCEundertook preparation appraisal toolkit and appraisal of 3 towns with the objective to provide all necessary information to make decisions on lending by ascertaining the credit worthiness of each proposed urban water supply and sanitation project.

STUDY AND CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION OF LIQUIDWASTEMANAGEMENTFORGONDARTOWN

MCE completed a consultancy service for study of liquid waste management for Gondar Town. The study includes socio economic survey, identification of damping site, design work, tender document preparation and construction supervision. THREE TOWNS WATER SUPPLY CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT IN AMHARA REGION

MCEin association with RODECO Consulting GmbH of Germany completed a project on the financial aspects of the project. MCE’s activities include establishing financial systems, customizing computer program and writing of manual for the towns to the three selected towns.

INVENTORY OF WATER SUPPLY SCHEMES IN AMHARA REGION

MCE is completed project on Inventory of Water supply schemes in Amhara region and preparation of Database for the schemes.

MCE is undertook the study and design of water supply systems in 98 rural centers, in the Oromia Region. The study includes socio-economic study hydro-geological and hydrological investigations and design and recommendations for water supply facilities.

MANAGEMENT MODELS & CONTRACTUAL, LEGAL ARRANGEMENTS OF WATER SUPPLY IN URBAN & RURAL AREAS, ETHIOPIA, MARCH 2002

The preparation of Management Models and Legal, Contractual Arrangements of water supply in urban and rural areas is undertaken by MCE. IMPROVEMENT OF TOWNS WATER SUPPLIES OPERATIONS IN MZUZU AND KARONGA, MALAWI, DECEMBER 2001 TO JULY 2002

MCE had undertaken improvement of towns water supply operations in Mzuzu and Karonga under the Northern Region Water Board in Malawi.The assignments includes reviewing existing water supply infrastructure and management situations and recommending improvements both in the operation and management of the system as well as the rehabilitation of essential parts.

THE ETHIOPIAN WATER AND SANITATION SECTOR REVIEW, 2000

MCE undertook the Ethiopian Water and Sanitation Sector Review. The object of this study was to describe the existing status and current activities in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector in Ethiopia, identify key problems and issues in the sector and recommend options to WaterAidEthiopia.

FEASIBILITY STUDY, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION OF KARONGA AND CHITIPA WATER SUPPLY SCHEMES, MALAWI,

Under agreement with Northern Region Water Board, Malawi, MCE undertook consultancy services for study design and construction supervision of Karonga and Chitipa water supply scheme project.

WATER SUPPLY DEVELOPMENT AND REHABILITATION, FEASIBILITY STUDY AND ENGINEERING DESIGN OF 8 TOWNS, 1999 - 2001

MCE in association with TAHAL Consulting Engineers Ltd was engaged in preliminary rehabilitation program feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed engineering designs for the water supply systems in 8 towns and for the study related to the provision of sanitation/sewerage facilities.

AMBO AND NEKEMTE WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY AND ENGINEERING DESIGN 1999- 2000

MCE was engaged in the Feasibility Study and Engineering Design of Ambo and Nekemte Towns Water Supply Project.

DALE AND SHEBEDINO RURAL WATER SUPPLY SCHEME PROJECT, 1997 - 1998

MCE has undertaken the detail engineering design and study of operational and maintenance, management set-up for Dale and Shebedino Rural Water Supply Scheme. The objective of this project is to provide adequate and safe water for over 271, 000 people. The study included assessment of manpower and financial requirements of the operation and maintenance of the system, recommend an appropriate community managed management system, study and survey of the optimal pipe line route, design of the spring intake, booster pumping stations, reservoirs and main pipe line and distribution net work in the SNNPRS, South Ethiopia.

IMPROVEMENT TO INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES AND WATER SUPPLY FOR SANDFORD ENGLISH COMMUNITY SCHOOL 1998 - 2000

MCE undertook the study for the improvement of the existing infrastructure, water supply, sewerage system, storm drains external works and electrical installation. MCE also conducted construction supervision for the rehabilitation works.

MCE was engaged by the Ethio-Italian Development Co-operation, Arsi-Bale Rural Development Project in the Rural Water Supply design and supervision for Selka and Waltai-Sayida Communities in Bale, Region 4, Ethiopia

PREPARATION OF RURAL WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION HANDBOOK, 1996

MCE in association with Carl Bro International undertook the Preparation of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Handbook for the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund.

GASH-BARKA RURAL WATER SUPPLY FEASIBILITY STUDY IN ERITREA - COMPLETED

Gash-Barka Zone Rural Water Supply Feasibility Study in Eritrea was financed by KFW. The activities carried out were socio-economic study, groundwater assessment and design and development of prototype schemes for different village setting including operation & maintenance guidelines.

PREPARATION OF PROJECT COMPLETION REPORT

Preparation of Project Completion Report for Mpira-Balaka Rural Water Supply Project and District Water Supply, Phase II Project in Malawi for the African Development Bank.

ELEVEN TOWNS WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY; COMPLETED

MCE was sub-consultant to Sanyo Consultants of Japan and undertook the survey of water use and sanitary conditions as well as surveys of socio-economic and cultural background of the target population. The project was funded by Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).

SMALL TOWNS WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT, UGANDA - COMPLETED

MCE through its Nairobi based subsidiary firm, MBC, and in association with ACE of Kampala, Uganda and John Van Nostrand Associates Limited (JVA) of Canada, was involved in the design and construction supervision of water supply and sanitation services for the towns of Lugazi and Wobulenzi in Uganda. The study which commenced in 1994 was based on the concept of demand-driven, community-based services.

WUSH WUSH II TEA PLANTATION WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

MCE undertook the assessment of availability of ground water system for WushWush II Tea Factory and worker’s residential area and prepared designs, 1998.

DIRE-DAWA TEXTILE FACTORY; FEASIBILITY STUDY OF WATER SUPPLY 1994-1995

MCE was engaged by the Dire-Dawa Textile Factory to assess the existing factory water demand and supply and to come up with recommendations and designs for system improvement, upgrading and/or expansion.

2 TOWNS WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

Feasibility study and design for water supply and sanitation for the towns of Axum and Lalibela. The work was carried out by MCE in association with DEVECON of Finland.

ADWA WATER SUPPLY STUDY- 1993

Feasibility study and design of a water supply system for the town of Adwa, based on storage dam. The study also included the provision of drinking water supplies to the small rural towns and communities around Adwa and was carried out for Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WSSA) by MCE in joint venture with DEVECON of Finland

MEKELE WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY- 1993

Feasibility study and design of the water supply and sanitation system. Part of the work was undertaken by MCE as sub-consultants to DEVECON of Finland.

TOWNS WATER SUPPLY STUDY

Feasibility study and design of water supply system for Assela, Shashemane and Zeway towns and rehabilitation for 7 other towns. The study also included water supplies to the rural communities in the immediate environs of towns and was conducted for Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. A staff of MCE participated as Deputy Project Manager of the Tahal Consulting Engineers team.

5 TOWNS WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION STUDY

Feasibility study and design of water supply and sanitation systems for 5 major towns in Ethiopia. Part of the work was undertaken by MCE as sub-consultants to DEVECON Engineers and Architects.

GODE AGRO-INDUSTRIAL PROJECT

Feasibility study for irrigation study on 20,000 ha land and associated agro industrial establishment including the provision of drinking water supply to the surrounding rural communities. The study was conducted for ministry of state farm. A staff of MCE participated as an irrigation expert as part of Tahal Consulting Engineers team.

STUDY ON THE MANAGEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT

MCE in association with SINTEC undertook a study of the Management of Construction Equipment for the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund. The study reviewed the existing establishment of operation and maintenance of water supply and earthworks construction equipment in Ethiopia. Over six alternatives for the management of equipment fleet were assessed and based on objective criteria established, the preferred fleet management options were ranked and recommendation provided. The study was supported by UNDP.
